College Information: SAT and ACT

Almost all 4-year colleges require that applicants take either the SAT or ACT test.  The SAT and ACT are given on a Saturday morning at 8:00am.  Students should be at their chosen site by 7:45am. If you are late, they do not let you take the test.

SAT Information and Registration

For information about the SAT visit: http://www.collegeboard.com

Each test is $47; registering after the deadline incurs a late fee of $24.  Mrs. Kovel  has fee waivers for students whose families qualify.   The SAT is comprised of 3 test areas:  Reading, Math and Writing. At this time, the Reading and Math scores are most important to colleges.  The scores on each section range from 200-800 with 800 being a perfect scores.  When colleges refer to a “combined SAT score”, they mean the total of the Reading and Math scores.

Testing dates for the 2011-2012:

The ACT had historically been “the” college admissions test given in the Midwest U.S.  Now it is widely accepted at most colleges.  Some students do better on the ACT, so it might be worth giving it a try.  The highest ACT score can get is a 36.

Online Test Preparation

Common Ground High School has purchased the use of online SAT test preparation from Method Test Prep .  Students have access to this website 24 hours a day/7 days a week and can get onto it wherever they can get on the internet.  Even if students get on 20-30 minutes 3 times a week, they can improve their scores.  It’s important to start at least 2 months before the test.  Parents can be very helpful by making sure their child uses this valuable tool.
