NEW HAVEN — It was just another Monday and another school assembly for Common Ground environmental charter school teacher Jeremy Stone, until he walked into the cafeteria and saw his wife and newborn baby, parents and in-laws crowded in the back among news reporters.
Stone, 31, knew he was one of 100 finalists for the national Unsung Heroes awards program, sponsored by ING global financial services company. He did not know that out of 1,600 applicants nationwide, he was the top winner.
When executives from ING presented Stone with a check for $27,000 to help fund his Environmental Ventures class, it became a very good Monday.
“This is awesome,” said a clearly surprised Stone.
