NEW HAVEN — The city served up a full platter of plans Wednesday for National Food Day, as officials dug into a list of ideas to boost healthy eating.

With a phalanx of local chefs on hand at Yale University’s Peabody Museum of Natural History, the city unveiled the draft of the New Haven Food Policy Action Plan, which the 12-member New Haven Food Policy Council intends to complete by the end of November.

“There was not a Food Policy Council 20 years ago,” said Mayor John DeStefano Jr., noting how much food awareness has changed since he took office. “A food caucus in New Haven was the line in front of Pepe’s and Sally’s.”

The action plan is intended to beef up access to healthful local food, build up the city’s food economy and teach people how to make good nutritional choices.
