What is a Traveling Field Trip?

If bringing your students to Common Ground’s West Rock campus doesn’t work for you, a Common Ground educator can bring the field trip to your school! These programs are available on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings. See below for details and program descriptions. Schedule a Travelling Field Trip now!

Number of children: These hands-on, interactive programs are offered for one class of children at a time (they are not large assembly programs)

Cost: $100 for the first class and $50 for each additional class on the same day (additional travel charge may be added for schools more than 10 miles from Common Ground)

Program length: 60 minutes

Indoors or outdoors? Most of these programs include some outside time, using your schoolyard as part of the curriculum! We can adjust to only use indoor spaces if needed based on weather.

Programs:

Checking out Chickens

Students will learn about the life cycle of a chicken through observation, demonstration and hands-on investigation. They will examine the different parts of the egg, read a story of the journey from egg to chick and meet one of the chickens from our farm!

Maple Sugaring

K - 8th | Feb - Mar only | indoors or outdoors

Learn about the process of making maple syrup from trees, including science, history, and food elements. Students will explore sugaring tools, learn tree identification and biology, and taste test different types of syrup.

Wooly Wonders

pre-K - 3rd | indoors or outdoors

Students will discover the process of taking wool from sheep to sweater through hands-on activities to engage the senses. They’ll sequence the steps, compare different types of wool, learn the history and process of shearing sheep, and try their hand at carding and spinning a piece of wool to take home.

Exploring Your Schoolyard

all grades| outdoors only

Take an adventure outside to learn about the environment and green spaces around your school! Use your senses, go on a micro-hike, look for signs of animals and plants, and other age-appropriate activities in your outdoor classroom!

WATER! Where is it?

4th - 8th | outdoors only

This fun, engaging session gets students outside, moving, working together, and thinking about the water cycle and local watersheds. Students will search for water, and evidence of water, in their schoolyard and learn about their relationship to the water cycle and local watershed.

Teambuilding

4th - 8th | indoors or outdoors

Have a skilled facilitator engage your students in teambuilding activities, working together to develop cooperation skills and boost class cohesion.
